Tsunami crisis - situation update

Providing shelter, rebuilding livelihoods

Oxfam is working with local partners to help create the conditions for displaced people to return home. March 26 saw the official end of the relief phase of Tsunami response in Indonesia and the start of the recovery and reconstruction phase.

Oxfam is currently assisting more than 500,000 people in Sri Lanka, Indonesia (includes Nias), South India, and the Nicobar Islands. Oxfam has spent over US$25 million (through March) in these efforts. Our focus is now turning toward long-term shelter needs and gender issues, and how to reduce poverty and suffering in this context. Here is the latest summary of what we have achieved through working closely with local people in the affected regions.

  • Heavy rains over the past week cause great concern as they wreck temporary shelters in Cuddalore, India. The saltpan recovery process in Nagapattinam is also halted following the heavy rain.
  • 320 million pounds raised by Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) appeal. Recent DEC report states that the appeal exceeded all previous DEC appeals put together.
  • Oxfam is now the lead for all Agriculture activities in Matara, Sri Lanka.
  • People living in Lhokseumawe, Indonesia have access to piped water for the first time since the tsunami.
